Field Awareness

The following slides contain issues that were seen during product testing and may occur in the field.  Please familiarize yourself with each of these issues, as you will be tested on the key concepts at the end of the lesson. Samples and reference images are provided where available.

Toner Cartridge Replacement Guidelines

  • When to replace the Cartridge:
  • Broken port shutter–Smart Chip read errors (31.4X)
  • Cartridge motor stalls (201.2X)
  • DO NOT replace the Cartridge for PQ defects!
  • All PQ defects are associated with the Imaging Unit.
  • The Cartridge does not contain any EP components.

“Milky” Appearance on Paper

  • This defect is created when toner melts and moves prior to receiving pressure in the fuser.
  • This movement exposes the media color under the toner and creates a light, “milky” appearance on the media.
  • This primarily could happen in high humidity environments when the edges of the media become saturated with moisture while the center stays dry.
  • This creates waviness (or rippling) in the edges of the media which cause the paper to enter the fuser unevenly.

Things you can try to resolve the problem:
  • Try a new ream of paper (that has never been opened) in the Tray.
  • Check the media settings in the printer and verify they are correct for the paper type/weight used.
  • Flip the paper in the Tray so the rippled edge enters the printer last.
  • Keep media out of any direct airflow from an air handling vent.
  • Store unused media in an air tight container to keep it dry until needed.
  • If you are using 16lb media for duplex try a heavier media (20 or 24lb).

If none of these suggestions work, try replacing the fuser.
